Wild Dog Beard Co. recently popped up on my radar. As an owner of two dogs that can at times be politely decribed as wild, based on the name alone, I knew right away I'd be giving their products a review. After taking a look at this company's website, it became quite clear that this is a brand that takes beard care seriously. Offering a wide range of handcrafted products in scent profiles that are both traditional and unique, I had a difficult time settling on somehting to review. I finally chose to try their beard butter because it was advertised as having no beeswax (don't get me wrong, I like beeswax as an ingredient, but there are times when I want something a little softer and lighter. Will this butter have me ordering new Wild Dog products? Let's take this doggy for a walk around the block and find out...
The Crowned Gem Scent is listed on the Wild Dog website as "too complex to describe"...and there's definitely a lot going on. Initially, I get a pungent, green, vegetal note, almost like fresh cut grass, but not quite that, more a sugggestion of it. This is tempered by a very musky amber that forms an extremely structured base. The midnote sports a cool, sweet incence (sort of oud-adjacent, but I'd stop short of calling it straight up oud), punctuated by flashes of extremely rugged rawhide, and rounded out by an implacable eastern spice that really lends an exotic quality to this overall scent. There's also an underlying, cloying sweetness in this product, which I recognized right away, it has nothing to do with the blend of scent oils, it's actually an ingredient that serves an important function; mango butter. Most people seem to like the scent of mango butter, so I'm sure I'm in the minority with this opinion, but I find that it always adds a bit too much sweetness to any product that incorporates it (It doesn't smell like mangoes, it's just smells very sweet and slightly fatty)...that being said, it's not overpowering, and doesn't ruin the overall scent of this product...it's just present, and if sweet scents arent your thing, you'll want to be aware of that. Strength is perfectly medium, not too much, but definitely noticable to anybody who gets close to you. I find that staying power is phenominal, and this scent really evolves throughout the course of the day.
How does it work?
Perhaps my favorite thing about this product is the whipped texture, it's super light and airy, and melts in my hands easily. This helps it work deep down into my beard with ease. Body is super lightweight, which makes combing through a breeze. Now I was a bit harsh on the smell of mango butter before, but the benefits of this stuff are undeniable, keeping your skin feeling super soft (if you have any extra product on your hands make sure you rub it into your arms, because it works like the most hydrating lotion you've ever tried. The avocado oil in this product really feeds and nourishes each individual beard hair, creating an extremely luxurious feel and an incredibly full apperance. Hold is minimal, so this probably isn't the product that you'd want to use on one of your beard's most unruly days, but it is just perfect for those days when you're going for a soft, natural look. It imparts just a bit of shine (again, playing into the natural look). Staying power is about what you'd expect from a product on the lighter side, on hotter, or more active days, you may want to give yourself a touchup in the afternoon, but I'd stop short of saying that this would be necessary on days where you participare in more low-impact activites.
The bottom line
Beard butter is probably my all around favorite beard care product, but there is no one solid definition for what makes a butter. This is a unique product in that it nourishes my beard like a heavyweight butter, while keeping it as soft and light as a thin butter, it strikes a great balance. Wild Dog Beard Co. offers a ton of different scents, so if you arent looking for something quite as complex as their Crowned Gem offering, there will definitely be something out there to suit you. From a quality standpoint, you can tell that there was a great amount of thought put into the creation of this product. The introduction to this product line was an absolute delight, and I am definitely looking forward to trying some of their other small-batch, handmade offerings.
