I think it would be stating the obvious to say that we all have our favorite scent profiles when it comes to our beard-care routines. Some guys go for gourmand scents, others prefer the more whimsical florals, I myself, like ouds (because...y'know, I never mention it, right?)...but I think there is one profile that is pretty much universally loved by all guys out there...tobacco scents. Perhaps this is due to the wide range of tobacco scents out there, some spicy, some woody, some green, others still an incredibly spot on approximation of aged cigars. Perhaps it is because tobacco scents are the height of masculinity, even if you dont indulge, I'm sure you have fond memories of a dad, or grandpa, or trusted male role model lighting up a sweet smelling cigar or pipe. No matter which way you like your tobacco, chances are that you have at least one tobacco scented product in your beard-care arsenal. The Bearded Bastard is no stranger to using tobacco in their scents, but with this latest, limited offering, they've created something completely different. With a tobacco-meets-vintage-colognes presence, this just may be the next universally loved tobacco-scented crowd pleaser...Let's give it a spin and see how it measures up...
There's something so wonderfully "old school" about this scent. Potent, fermented tobacco bales create an imposing presence, establishing this fragrance as anything but your typical "cigar-inspired" spice bomb. A sharp, sweet honeyed chord emerges, dusted with a fresh "barbershop" note that further accentuates the vintage feel of this scent, medicinal, pungent, and totally unexpected. A haze of dusty smoke rolls in like an authoratative fog, flanked on either side by a worn leather and eucalyptus accord which cranks up the level of sensual masculinity to eleven. A warm, thick, amber wind blows in, malevolent, electric, and on fire, carrying with it the sophisticated presence of slow burning pipe tobacco sizzling in a cocoa sweetness. As the day progresses, a smart, earthy, almost dirty (but in a good way) note of shag mixed with dry roses, incense, and patchouli emerges, creating a damp-smelling accord that will set aboil the blood of anybody who smells it. An anacrhonistic tribute to something most of us arent old enough to remember, but somehow feel a connection to. Strength is a solid medium-plus, and staying power is legendary, lasting well into the evening and still detectable the following morning.
How does it work?
Not just untraditional in scent, the performance of this product is definitely something different too. This rich, viscous oil gets deep down into my beard and forms a nourishing, protective layer on my skin. I'm not entirely sure, but it does seem like there are times when I first apply this oil and can feel something of a warming sensation. This could possibly be due to the addition of rosehip oil to the carrier blend, you see, rosehip oil is like a superfood for your skin, armed to the teeth with essential fatty acids and vitamins, it is known to inprove skin circulation and elasticity, imparting a younger apperance, and making your face feel its absolute healthiest. All of the other heavy hitters are represented in the formulation of this product; meadowfoam, castor, pomegranite seed, the list goes on. But I'd like to take just a sentence or two to discuss another less-than-common ingredient that seems to yeild amazing results for me; broccoli seed oil. Yup, like the same broccoli that you eat with thinly sliced beef and lobster sauce at your favorite Chinese restaurant, the seed of the broccoli plant produces an oil that is incredibly beneficial for skin and hair...with a ridiculously high concentration of antioxidants including something called arachidonic acid, which is something of a miracle cure for inflamed skin, and packing oodles of vitamin B6 which has been proven to strengthen hair, broccoli seed oil is definitely one of those carrier oils that I'm surprised has not become more popular in the world of beard care. Absorption and conditioning properites of this oil are second to none, leaving behind an incredible softness with absolutely no greasy feel. Finishing properties are also second to none, imparting a brilliant shine. Staying power is phenominal, keeping itch and dryness in check all day long on a single application.
The bottom line
The Bearded Bastard is one of those brands that does everything first rate, I've already gushed over their outstanding, and innovative packaging, but this company is so much more than lazer engraved wood labels. With an obvious commitment to quality and innovation, every time I try a product bearing that signature look, I find myself more and more impressed. This particular oil raises the bar to all new heights, with a scent that will warm your bones and turn heads all day long, paired with performance that will have your beard looking and feeling absolutely incredible. Unfortunately being a limited release, this product is currently unavailable on The Bearded Bastard website, but there has been some whispers on social media that this product may recieve more than a few more limited engagements in he coming year, so it would be worth signing up for their mailing list to guarantee that you will be among the first to know when you can get your hands on this stuff again...and believe me, you're going to want to get your hands on this stuff when you can!
