Since their launch last year, Tailored Beard Company has developed something of a cult following, with a full suite of products in a wide range of scents that seem to be sold out almost as often as they are available, this is a label that has found its way into the beard-care aresenals of the most in-the-know bearded guys. Based out of Bergenfield, New Jersey, every single product Tailored Beard Company produces, is made by hand, in small batches, to guarantee top-shelf quality. This is one of those brands that has been on my radar for quite some time, but for whatever reason, I've waited until now to try. Their butter, in particular seems to rack up accolades from all who try it, so I figured what better way to see what this company is all about? I picked this scent for the simple reason that the cherries on the label look like the gummy cherries in a bag of Haribo Star Mix (which are my favorite part)...you laugh, but sometimes, when every option looks like a good one, I'll let something as simple as that influence my decision...plus I sometimes feel that I don't give fruit-forward scents the attention that they deserve. Will this stuff live up to the high expectations set the high praise of countless satisfied customers? Let's give it a try and find out...
As the name suggests this scent is based around a big, juicy wild cherry note. Candy sweet and dripping with freshness, it's the smell of a blazing red sunset as you cruise down the highway in a freshly detailed, blood red 1968 280SL, the top down, the crisp coastal air filling your lungs and ruffling your hair...to your left, the surface of the Pacific shimmers like a giant ruby set ablaze with the crackling energy of that magical hour where day lazily melts into night. This is perhaps the most "red" scent I've ever owned (if that makes any sense), I mean, it doesn't just smell like a cherry, it doesn't just remind me of a cherry...to smell this scent is a full-on release into a cherry scented atmosphere that can't help but cast a brilliant red tint onto everything that enters it. A rich, waxed leather note collides with a delicate powderiness, and undulates on a frequency just below the surface, exhuding a sophisticated masculinity, and adding a wonderful bit of dimensionality. While the faintest hint of something tropical, almost coconutty provides the perfect touch of youthful energy, making this scent feel so incredibly carefree. A fantastic, luscious, almost romantic fragrance that moves on red-leather shod feet that don't so much walk on the ground, as hover a few inches above it. I wish this scent would project a bit more, although it does seem to throw a good sillage. Strength is medium initially, but quickly settles to a notch or two below that, after a short time...as such, this butter can be easily overpowered by whatever oil you choose to layer it with, so make your decisions carefully...if you're looking for a real treat, the combination of this stuff with the Black Lodge oil from Last Looks Grooming is absolutely devine. Staying power is very good, as I have found this scent to still be detectable for a good 6-8 hours every time I've worn it.
How does it work?
A dense, poured butter, with what seems like a higher concentration of wax than most, this stuff means business. I am reminded a bit of the butter offerings from Fresh Beards when I use this product, although in fairness, I think I may like the performance of this product a bit better...that's not a criticism of the Fresh Beards butters (which I love), but instead, high praise for this stuff. The melting point of this product seems marginally higher than that of most butters out there, as I rub it inbetween my palms it turns into a heavyweight elixir, the consistencey of fresh honey, that seemingly coats every individual hair of my beard as I comb it through. Conditioning is exceptional, some of the best I've ever experienced from this type of butter, imparting a wonderful combination of softness, healthiness, and strength. The addition of Jamaican black castor oil may be what really sets this product apart, as its occlusive properties are second to none, sealing in vital hydration all day long, and the high content of beneficial fatty acids are said to encourage healthy beard growth (I also find that it helps curb shedding even better than regular castor oil, which as regular readers of this site already know, I'm quite the fan of). In-beard feel is extremely light, leaving behind no greasy feel or sticky residue. The presence of good quality bees wax in this stuff means that it offers a bit more hold than most butters, keeping strays and fly-aways in check all day long without the need for any re-combings. Staying power is also excellent, delivering exceptional protection as well as top-notch nourishment for my beard and face from morning until night without any need for reapplication.
The bottom line
I don't know about all of you reading this...but it's been a long week for me. It goes that way sometimes; you go for days on end not getting quite enough sleep, not eating quite as well as you'd like, just feeling a bit "run down". It is precicesly times like these when a product like this one ceases to be just a plain old beard butter, and instead turns into a mood elevator. With an exceptional fragrance, executed in such a way that it tells much more of a story than your run-of-the-mill cherry scents are even capable of, and performance that has my beard looking and feeling strong and rejuvinated, a butter like this can help put a little spring in your step, even in the middle of one of those "sleep is for mere mortals" and "coffee is a food group" type of weeks...but even on your most well rested and refreshed days, this stuff can still add a little extra jolt of excitement to your beard-care routine, it's just that good. This is definitely a butter that I highly recommend...sadly, it appears that this scent is currently unavailable on the Tailored Beard Company website, I have no clue if it will be making a return any time soon, but if their other butters perform as well as this one, I have a hard time believeing you'll be dissapointed, no matter what scent you pick up!
