This is a brand that caught my eye not too long ago. A relatively new company, offering a wide range of beard care products in really intriguing scents, I decided I needed to give them a try (especially because they share a name with the greatest sportscaster in the history of television...albeit spelled differently, but that's okay). I was looking for a new "barbershop" scented oil to use after my weekly ritual of scraping a safety razor across my neck and edges of my beard. I don't know...there's just something comforting about that implacable, sweet, medicinal barbershop scent to round out a nice, close neck shave. Will this oil earn a spot in my shave day ritual? or will it not make the cut? Lets give it a whirl and find out...
I didnt get a ton of "barbershop" jumping out at me when I first opened the bottle and took a whiff, but after warming it in my hands and working it into my beard, I definitely started to get a familiar, sweet note of some sort of old fashioned hair tonic or shave soap; an herbaceous, note that borders on floral while still maintaining an air of masculinity. Images of colorful bottles of magic potions that make your skin tingle will dance through your head as you comb this oil through your beard. As the day goes by, a cool vegetal note seems to take center stage, while a calming component reminiscent of lavender lingers in the sillage. Longevity is great, it remains pleasantly present throughout the day. Strength is medium-plus with it being noticable, but never overpowering.
How does it work?
Sporting a simple list of ingredients, Skully's oils seem to have been blended in a perfect ratio, as there is just something very special about this oil. It is above average in viscosity, and it really seems to penetrate deeply to coat every individual hair of your beard, while moisturizing your face. It also leaves a great shine while never feeling heavy or greasy. Not only will you find that it makes your beard feel extremely soft, but it seems to add a bit of body too (I notice that my beard always seems to appear a little bit fuller with this oil than with most others). It also requires no reaplication throughout the course of the day, keeping you itch free and looking awesome from the time you style in the morning until the time you go to bed at night.
The bottom line
What's not to love about an oil with an amazing scent and incredible performance that exceeds all expectations? Of course, the fact that this is priced in what seems to be the sweet spot for beard oils, and that Skully's offers free S&H on all orders, only serve to make this even more of a "must have" for any beardsman. Even if barbershop scents arent your particular cup of tea, you'd be wise to check out some of their other scent offerings, I definitely plan to...if they're as good as Double Tap, I know I wont be disappointed.
