I've been really in to beard butter lately...not quite sure why...well yes I am...it's because for the most part, beard butters are awesome! They are perfect for days when you dont need a ton of hold, but still want something that that is going to help you shape and style with ease while locking in all the awesomenes of your favorite oil. I recently added this offering form Royal Beardsmen to my collection, because I was looking for something in a bay rum scent, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to try a new company that I'm not extremely familiar with. Will this butter earn a place in my regular rotation? Or will it just end up being a royal disappointment? Lets give it a try and find out.
I absolutely love the smell of bay rum, I love it so much so that I actually had a pimenta racemosa tree sent to me from Florida so that I could make my own bay rum cologne. This particular product has a bay rum-ish scent...but I would stop short of calling it bay rum. In fairness, it's never directly stated anywhere on the product packaging or the Royal Beardsmen website that Tortuga Bay is a traditional "bay rum"...in fact they go so far as to call it their own take on the scent. Which leaves some room for creativity (especially when you take into account the fact that there is really no single definitive formula for bay rum). The aroma is still quite pleasant, there is a prominent note reminiscent of vanilla and coconut (it's so prominent, in fact, that the first time I used this product, I had to double check the description on the website just to make sure that I hadn't accidentally ordered a different scent than I thought I did), and there's a good amount of cinnamon in there, combine these elements and you get this unctuous, gourmand scent that conjures up images or horchata in my head. The strength level is just right, noticable, but never overwhelming, longevity is good too, lasting well into the day. I'd be lying if I said I didnt wish it smelled a little closer to a traditional bay rum, but you'll definitely enjoy the results you get if you layer it with an oil that is.
How does it work?
The consistency of this butter is a bit on the stiff side, which makes for a wonderful medium-plus hold...perfect for those days when your beard might need a little control, but still want something lightweight that wont leave your beard feeling oily or weighed down. The blend of ingredients will leave your mane feeling incredibly nourished, throughout the day, I am especially a fan of their use of hempseed oil, which is packed full of vitamins and essential fatty acids that really give your beard a silky soft texture, and an extra healthy glow (I really dont know why more beard care products dont include this particular ingredient). Moisturizing is teriffic, you'll experience zero itch or dryness at any point in the day. This is definitely a butter that overdelivers from a performance standpoint.
The bottom line
Quibbles about the scent aside, this is a really good product. I am definitely planning on picking up more of what Royal Beardsmen has to offer, if everything else they make works as well as their beard butter, this relatively new company (est. 2018) will be well on their way to becoming an established, trusted name in beard care products.
