Kingsmen has always been one of my favorite beard-care companies, the brand with unique natural scent blends, and notoriously difficult-to-photograph labels definitely occupies a decent chunk of real estate in my collection. When the news dropped of a quick-strike limited edition scent on black friday, I didn't think twice about grabbing some. Christened "The Wizard" this oil follows in the great all-natural tradition of other Kingsmen products. With a blueberry and thyme profile, this scent could possibly be one of the most interesting in their entire lineup of destinctive fragrances. Let's give it a try and see where it ranks among the other legendary oils that proudly sport the Kingsmen crest.
With a firm, fruity bouquet reminiscent of a young Lodi Zinfandel, this oil is fresh, ripe, and brimming with berry scented attitude. A huge candy-like blueberry jam accord springs forward with a zesty vibrancy that drips with a thick, sugar syrup redolence that is at once gourmand and playful, like a the most perfect slice of blueberry pie you've ever tasted, served on an antique, chartreuse Fiestaware plate. Texture and edge is provided by a wonderful herbaceous chord of thyme with its deliciouly sophisticated earthiness and bright notes of lemon and mint, it provides the perfect amount of both contrasting seriousness, as well as complimentary gourmand liveliness. Packed with character, this is easily the best scent that Kingsmen has ever made (yes even better than the much lauded Holy Grail), initially a fairly straightforward berry profile, this stuff reveals its inner sophistication as the day goes on, resulting in a lingering pleasantness, and a silliage that is all but guaranteed to draw compliments all day long. Strength is medium-to-medium-plus, and staying power is excellent, lasting for hours. This oil pairs brilliantly with the legendary Bilberry Bastard balm by Luxurious Bastard, amplifying the berry sweetness of both...but if you really want a "next level" pairing, try following this oil up with The Grower balm by Barbu, the two combine to make something so incredibly fresh and multi-dimensional that you may just find yourself eschewing cologne on days that you wear this combination.
How does it work?
You can always count on Kingsmen oils to deliver a good level of performance. With a fairly straightforward list of ingredients, this is a great "everyday" oil with outstanding occlusive properties. The combination of grapeseed, jojoba, and sweet almond priovide a sufficient amount of conditioning and moisturize my face well...although, I cant help but think that Kingsmen could take their oils to a whole new level with the inclusion of a higher performing oil in the carrier blend (I can't help but think that hemp seed or avocado oil might turn this into a truly legendary product). Staying power is decent, but I do find myself reaching for a touch-up almost every time I wear this stuff. This is an oil better suited to milder weather days, as it just doesn't seem to hold up to the chilly December afternoons as well as some other more heavyweight oils do.
The bottom line
Kingsmen continues to produce a reliable product that smells great. While I do wish that they may consider a slightly more comprehensive blend of carrier oils, I've never been let down by their products. This is easily my favorite scent ever rolled out by this company, but sadly it is a limited edition product, and appears to already be sold out on the Kingsmen website...who knows when, and if, they ever plan on rolling this particular marque out again...but if this stuff is ever back in stock, I highly recommend adding this to your collection!
