Those new to the beard-care game will be excused if they didn't realize what a great resource Etsy is to find new, exciting small-batch beard care companies. Even some of the bigger, household names got their start by introducing their products to the market through Etsy, so it's a no-brainer that there are many top quality beard products to be found there. Kingdom Beard Co is a popular Etsy shop , with a wide range of offerings in scents that skew a bit more traditional. I picked up this particular limited edition oil after seeing it posted on their instagram account. I'll admit that I bought it just because I thought the red bottle looked cool...will I be rewarded for judging a book by its cover? Let's give it a try and find out.
Blended to resemble Polo Red, this is definitely an oil that would fall squarely into the "cologne type" category. Now, I haven't worn any Polo colognes in a while...nothing against them, they all just read, to me, as "young man's" scents, and this is no exception...I actually had to go to my local Sephora and get a sample of Polo Red the first time I wore this oil just to see how well it matched up...and to be honest, I prefer this oil's interpretation of the scent. Kingdom has done a great job of replicating the scent, but their version is a little less "intense", a little more "mature" (for lack of a better term). Cool, sporty citrus races along a freshly split red cedar log highway as a crisp, slightly fougere breeze blows gently in the background, while Asian red chili flakes pop in the midnote like so many firecrackers, awakening the senses. All the while a rich blend of middle-eastern spices dance and whirl about the highnote adding an alluring sense of mystery to the overall bouquet. This reminds me more of a summer scent, but when paired with a spicier balm or butter thet draws a bit more of the pepper/spice to the forefront, it really works well in autumn too! Strength is just slightly above medium, which I think helps to make this scent a bit more restrained and sophisticated than the cologne that inspired it. Staying power is good, lasting several hours (but stopping short of lasting all day).
How does it work?
Boasting an unfussy, efficient list of ingredients, this oil does its job well. Viscosity is a tick under medium, by no means thin, but I do find that I need a few more drops of this than I do of most oils. I've been over my appreciation of castor oil time and again, so I wont bore you by going down the entire list of benefits once more, but suffice it to say that this product seems to have a good amount of it in the formulation, because it makes my face feel extremely nourished and healthy, and adds a good bit of strength and a silky softness to my beard. It imparts a great amount of healthy shine for a super smart finished look. Staying power is decent, although I did find the need for a touchup on a couple of the occasions that I wore it, but if your day doesnt involve too much time outdoors, or doing anything extremely high impact, one application should last all day.
The bottom line
They say immitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but honestly, somebody at Polo should contact Kingdom and see if they would be willing to re-formulate Polo Red for them. This goes beyond just a fun take on a well known scent, this is like the next evolution of it, kudos are definitely in order for what Kingdom has managed to accomplish with the scent here. From a performance standpoint, this is a very good oil that definitely gets the job done. Factoring in value, and the fact that it's always cool to support the independent brands out there, I'd say that there should be no question about picking up some of this stuff...now the only thing is, that as a limited offering, theres no telling how long it will be around, according to the product page on Etsy, there are only a few bottles left, and who knows when it will be available again? So dont wait too long, or you might miss out...
