The dog days are winding down...and one might think that baseball should take a bask seat, with football officially underway, and basketball and hockey just around the corner...but true baseball fans, like yours truly, know that this is the most intense time of the year. The big dogs jockey for postseason positions, while the scrappy, hungry long-shots scratch and claw just to make it to October. Some people might complain that the pace of baseball is too slow for them, but the MLB postseason seems to be the absolute most high energy, break-neck-paced playoffs of any sports league. I've recently become a huge fan of Fresh Beards products, so when I saw that they had a baseball themed scent, I knew I would need to have it in preparation for an awesome October. Will this oil join the awesome Fresh Beards balm and butter I've already tried to complete an awesome triple play? Let's step up to the plate and give it a few swings...
I was expecting something different when I first tried this oil. From the description on the website, I thought it would be more of a "cigar" type scent, which I usually take to be a pretty straight forward tobacco; sort of gourmand and unctuous, with a musky/earthy base note, and a generous helping of cedar (all of those things are awesome, don't get me wrong)...and while it is very tobacco driven, it's so much more unique than what I was picturing in my mind. Intense, spicy tobacco mingles with a hint of clove that is present, but not too "clove-y" (if that makes any sense), to create a combination that is so much greater than the sum of its parts; leather and espresso jump out in front, but a faint cinnamon note and just the slightest, hint of cherry brandy seem to balance these out perfectly, there is also just the mildest suggestion of something floral which hangs around in the silliage and really adds to the depth of this scent. This is an incredibly wild scent in the fact that it definitely smells much more complex than the individual components that came together to create it, but I suppose that's what makes a great cigar, so why wouldn't that be the same thing that makes a great cigar scented oil? Strength is on the top edge of medium-plus, if you don't like strong scents this might be a bit much for you. Staying power is fantastic, lingering in my beard, sweet and aromatic, like the thick rich smoke of a well aged Cohiba.
How does it work?
The shea olein really bumps up the viscosity of this oil to a fantastic level. It seems to coat each and every individual beard hair, and combs through wonderfully. It penetrates deeply leaving my face feeling super nourished and refereshed. Conditioning properties are outstanding, as not only does it impart an awesome silkiness, but it seems to make my beard feel "stronger" (for lack of a better term), from follicle to tip...like I could tie it to something heavy and pull it with my chin (not that I would, because that would be nuts, and probably cause a bunch of damage regardless of what oil I had used). Staying power is phenominal, keeping itchiness/dryness in check all day long, without the need for any reapplication. This is also one of the "driest" oils I've tried in recent memory, not even the slightest trace of greasiness. It leaves a bit of shine, but not as much as some, although this can be remidied easily depending on which balm/butter you choose to finish up with.
The bottom line
This is an outstanding oil! The price is reasonable and considering the high level of performance and amazing scent, it's a downright steal! Fresh Beards has become a name that I have come to equate with phenomenal quality, and their oil is no exception. This is definitely an oil that will be getting a lot of love from me this October...now hopefully the MLB postseason is as good to my Dodgers as this awesome oil is to my beard!
