For me, it all started with their outstanding 1920 beard butter, after that I was immediately hooked on Fresh Beards, their products just plain work, and work WELL. I've tried their balms (great) and their oils (outstanding), and I can say without a doubt that everything they make is top shelf, no question. They have continued to impress me time and time again, and even though they are one of the bigger names in this beard care game, they offer the same level of quality as some of my absolute favorite small-batch companies. I was so excited by the quality of their Major League oil, that I figured I needed to add a few more of their oils to my collection. With the colder days right here, I thought a nice energizing coffee scent might be just the ticket, after all, it should pair nicely with most spicy autumn balms or butters, and definitely help provide a little warmth (if only psychologically) on those chilly winter afternoons. Will this oil be the next in a long line of Fresh Beards products thatI find super-impressive? Let's give it a try and find out...
Reading like an evolution in coffee beans, this is a much more multi-dimensional scent than I was expecting...Imagine cutting open a burlap crocus bag as French roasted arabica beans spill out, perfectly fresh and well rested. Just begging to be ground and turned into one of the most magical elixirs known to man, they glisten with rich oil so strong that your mouth begins to water as the scent fills your nose...that's how this oil starts out. As the day progresses, this intense fresh coffee bean aroma rolls into a bouquet of piping hot espresso, floral and chocolatey, it's enough to whisk you away to the veranda of some European cafe, watching the world go by, without a single care as you slowly take another sip and let the rich flavor wrap around you like your favorite leather jacket thats broken in just right in all the correct places. There is one final evolution towards the end of the day, and I must admit that it isn't my favorite part of this whole experience, it mellows out into a sweet, almost burnt basenote reminiscent of dry instant coffee, not necessarily a bad smell, but definitely not as great as the phases that came before. Strength is medium-plus, and staying power is through the roof. In fact, this could be one of those rare cases where staying power is a bit too good, it seems like this product requires a bit of effort to wash out, as even after shampooing and conditioning, I find that my beard still smells a bit like this stuff the day after I wear it.
How does it work?
Just as with the previous Fresh Beards oil I tried, conditioning properties of this stuff are tremendous. My beard feels not only amazingly soft after using this, but also incredibly strong. It also nourishes the skin underneath brilliantly, leaving my face feeling incredibly refreshed and itch free, this is especially important during hoodie and jacket season as I find sometimes their higher collars can rub up on my beard throughout the course of a day and cause a bit of irritation. I am completely taken aback by how "dry" this oil is, no greasy feel whatsoever, and it really seems to hang around all day long too, as I've yet to need a reapplication of this stuff at any point in the afternoon or evening (even after days of doing yardwork, or moving stuff around in the garage).
The bottom line
Definitley another winner from Fresh Beards. The whole issue with the scent hanging around even after washings is really the only thing that keeps me from scoring this product as highly as the Major League oil, but overall, the scent is great. Performance is nothing short of brilliant (which I've come to expect from this company). When you factor in value (this stuff outperforms oils that cost twice as much), it's a total no-brainer, no beard collection is complete without oil from Fresh Beards, and if you're a fan of coffee scents, then this is definitely the one for you!
