After trying their beard butter, which was nothing short of amazing. I decided that I might need to add more products by Fresh Beards into my repertoire. After checking out their ingredients list online, I figured that their balm was worth a try. This particular scent comes with some very high recommendations from some of the most well known beardsmen on YouTube. Will this balm leave me as impressed as their butter did? Or will it find it's way to the cabinet under my bathroom sink and never see the light of day again? Let's give it a whirl...
One of the more popular scent descriptions when it comes to beard care products is "cologne type" but what does that really mean? From the time I was given a Cool Water gift set as a little kid, all the way up to present day, I have owned literally hundreds of different colognes, and I can say definitively that there is no one singular profile for a cologne. That being said, it seems that most embody a musky/spicy something-or-another that falls into the generic "masculine" category (think, middle of the road body wash, drugstore shaving cream, deodorant, etc...) nothing offensive, but nothing memorable either. This particular scent doesn't adhere to that formula. There's definitely a cedar/amber almost musky basenote typical of many colognes, but it opens up into a sweet green component that rides the line between citrus and floral (something reminiscent of cardamom), which yields to a green coffee bean/sweet tobacco note, wrapped in a fresh, clean, almost soapy high note, that seems to hang around for a good long while. The strength of this scent is medium-plus, never overpowering, but always fairly present, and it lasts for most of the day.
How does it work?
This is a slightly softer balm, it feels almost like a thick pomade or putty when you first scoop it out. As you warm it in your hands, you'll be surprised by how smooth it becomes, while remaining a thick, heavyweight concoction that spreads brilliantly and penetrates deep into your beard. As you comb it through, you'll notice how it seems to coat each individual hair, really aiding in the styling process. The high shea butter content means that unlike some balms, this wont have your beard feeling stiff and bristly, but rather, still soft and healthy. The level of control is off the charts, offering the hold of a wax, allowing you to really sculpt your beard exactly how you like it, while taming strays and fly -aways with ease. I am also a huge fan of the fact that it leaves absolutely no greasy/sticky residue whatsoever. Truly a top shelf balm.
The bottom line
The longer my beard gets, the less use I find I have for a great many balms they are all either too soft and greasy or too stiff and waxy, this product however, seems to bin that "Goldilocks" zone of being just right. It's almost as if it were designed with longer beards in mind. The scent is awesome, I find it compliments every cologne I've worn it with perfectly (I highly recommend trying it with Attitude by Giorgio Armani). The performance is outstanding (it's as if they magically took all the best properties of their butter and turned them into a great balm), and the price is right in line (if not a bit lower) than a great many quality balms on the market. All in all, another winner from the good folks at Fresh Beards!
