There is definitely no shortage of beard care products out there, I can only imagine how difficult it must be for some of these companies to compete for the attention of consumers. How does a new company pull away from the pack and get consumers to try their product? Well, giving away free stuff doesnt hurt. By now I'm sure you've seen the advertisements for Fatwood Beard Company, buy an oil and get a free tee shirt. Seems like a pretty low-risk investment if you ask me. As a bonus, after doing a little homework on this company, I've discovered that they pride themselves in using all natural ingredients, and really put an emphasis on quality. The free shirt was enough to get me to order once, but will the oil be good enough to get me to order again? Let's give it a try and find out...
Advertised as a blend of bay rum, sandalwood, and lavender, this is an extremely subtle scent, which those with sensitivities to strong oils will definitely appreciate. I get a lot of fresh, clean, almost dusty sandalwood, tempered by soft layers of sweet lavender. I don't pick up a whole lot of bay rum, almost more a vague spicy suggestion of bay rum that is just barely present in the background. Nothing too terribly complex, but the straightforward components coalesce to form a nice, unfussy, woodsy scent with a bit of sweet, floral dimensionality in the form of a very clean, fresh lavender. strength starts out on the medium side, but relaxes into a faint medium minus which hangs around for a good long while.
How does it work?
If you're having a day where your beard is just feeling a little out of sorts...maybe you've fried it a little bit with the blowdrier? Maybe you just slept on it weird and it wont lay down right...no matter what it is, this is the oil you want to reach for. The inclusion of avocado oil makes this an extremely effective beard oil...
Okay, boring "science behind why something works" time, if technical droning isn't for you feel free to skip ahead to the next paragraph...anyway...let's talk about avocado oil for a minute. Rich in oleic acid and monosaturated fats, this is one of the few oils that actually gets inside of each individual hair of your beard, not just sitting on top and sealing in what's already there. It plumps up each beard hair with healthy fats, to moisturize and strengthen like few oils can. In fact, you may actually find that it makes your beard appear more full!
Avocado oil alone is enough to make this an ideal oil for those dayss when your beard needs a little extra TLC...but the inclusion of top quality Argan oil and Jojoba (the usual suspects) help keep your face feeling hydrated and itch-free. Sweet almond oil seals everything in perfectly, so there is absolutely no need for reapplication at any point in the day.
The bottom line
So the tee-shirt offer is a nice attention grabber. but the fact of the matter is that this is an extremely high quality oil that could definitely hang with other oils in it's price class even without the inclusion of any freebies (it also comes with a little pice of heavenly smelling wood which I threw into my undershirt drawer as a natural freshener). My only real beef with this product is the fact that the scent could stand to be a bit stronger, but that's definitely more a matter of personal preference than anything else. All in all, this is the kind of product that could become the cornerstone of any respectable beard care arsenal. I definitely look forward to checking out more offerings from Fatwood Beard Co.
