Ive been a big fan of Duke Cannon grooming products for years now. A company that offers high quality grooming solutions, and innovative products that sit somewhere right in the middle of standard issue stuff that you find in the grooming aisle of your local grocery store, and ultra expensive stuff you buy at the mens counter of a fancy department store. Simply put, Duke Cannon offers premium products at a reasonable price. In addition to oversized soaps and quite possibly the best hand balm on the market, they sell a full compliment of beard products...but how do they compare to the rest of the vast field of beard care options? Lets find out...
So, the scent here is described as "Redwood"...as somebody who grew up in Northern California, I'm quite familiar with what redwoods smell like...and I've never smelled a redwood that even closely resembles what this oil smells like. That being said, theres nothing unpleasant about this scent, a spicy clove/cinnammon element blends with a citrus brightness and an herbal, almost medicinal (but in a good way) component, to make something vaguely reminiscent of Bay Rum, but still very much distinct from most Bay Rums I've smelled. The longevity on this scent is also very good (I generally consider any scent that I can still smell, however faintly, at the end of the day without any reapplication to be a success).
How Does it Work?
Viscosity leaves something to be desired, one of the thinner oils I've ever tried...this leads to some issues with long term conditioning (you will notice your beard feeling a little dry and in need of reapplication throughout the day). It combs through nicely, but never really seems to "coat" the hairs of your beard completely. Another drawback is the greasy feel it leaves on your skin and beard. It's not all bad though, it leaves an incredible shine on your beard, and can be very useful as a "finishing" oil (simply rub a small dab of this onto your beard after your normal routine to really give your beard that something "extra").
The Bottom Line
A fairly basic oil that has both its advantages and drawbacks. Probably not the best product in the entire Duke Cannon lineup, but definitely worth trying. Considering that a 3 ounce bottle of this barely costs more than many 1 ounce bottles of other oils, it does represent a good value (even when you take into consideration that you may need to reapply once or twice a day depending upon how active you are).
