It's wild to sit back and think about how much times change. Years ago, products openly flaunting a cannabis connection were reserved for a niche market of stoner kids, and sold behind the counter in filthy liquor stores, or somewhere on the back shelf of a novelty shop between the sex toys and the discount bin of keychains. Now-a-days the public view towards that green stuff has certainly become a whole lot less puritanical (which is weird, because even when people were pretending to be so against it, most of them were still getting down...but that's the topic for another conversation), today people see the potential in all sorts of hemp based products, and it's quickly become a billion dollar industry. With legalization of recreational weed popping up all over the map, it's no wonder that we are starting to see more and more products jockying for a spot in this burgeoning market; from hemp based textiles, to nutritional suppliments, it's everywhere these days, even in beard care products. Chronic Beard isn't the first company to use hemp derivitives in their beardcare products, but I cant think of a single men's grooming company that has so positively embraced the sticky-icky lifestyle. Working hard to change the perception of hemp based products, Chronic Beard meticulously crafts butters and oils by hand and offers them in three different scents that are unapologetically unique. They are definitely gaining some traction in their quest to promote the beneficial properties of the hemp plant to the beard-care industry, which is certainly a noble cause...but at the end of the day, the question is still how well their products stack up...let's give this butter a try and find out...
Described as a citrus scent on the Chronic Beard website, I must say that after wearing this stuff a few times, I'm still not sure how I feel about it...There's a faint lemongrass note that seems to get lost in the shuffle, aside from that I'd stop short of calling thiseven remotely citrusy (although it does pair nicely with more traditionally citrus scented oils). The strongest, most prominent note I get is something very earthy and sort of smoky...it reminds me, not so much of sitting around a campfire, but the way your jacket smells the next morning after sitting around a campfire the night before. There is also a faint marijuana bud scent, not so strong that it will turn any heads, but just nice and mellow, hanging out in the background gently reminding you of carefree afternoons spent in your first bachelor pad, sipping cheap beer and passing a doobie around with friends. This is pleasant enough, albeit not incredibly strong (overall strength of this scent is in the medium-minus to medium category), but there is also an implacable, fatty note, that reminds me of a less offensive version of mink oil, that just doesnt seem to belong. While definitely a different scent, it isnt a bad (especially considering the strength level). Staying power is so-so; not particularly noticable an hour or two into the day.
How does it work?
The first time I tried this product, I used way too much. I find that most butters require a bit more than the recommended amount to really be effective (and for wahtever reason, my beard seems to drink up product, so I'm usually pretty generous with my application sizes), but this stuff is the definition of a little bit going a long way, whatever you think a necessary amount is, use like half of that, trust me. The texture of this product is actually pretty light, with a great melting point...but for whatever reason it feels "heavy" when I first warm it in my hands and work it into my beard, so much so that every time I wear it, I'm almost certain that it's going to leave behind a residue, but amazingly, it never does. Hold is fantastic on this stuff, offering more control than your average butter. Conditioning properties are outstanding, you already know what a huge fan of hemp seed oil in beard-care products I am, and this stuff seems to take it to the next level with the generous amount of hempseed butter in its formulation. Imparting a dramaticly soft and healthy feel, and when I say dramatic, I mean it in the most serious sense of the superlative...it seems to instantly correct any sort of heat/elemental damage, and impart a feel that can only be described as luxurious. I would honestly be interested in trying this stuff as a leave in treatment, just like slathering it into my beard until the point of saturation, and then rinising it out an hour or so later just to see if it could be used to this capacity as well (I may actually try this the next time I trim my beard, as I find that is the best opportunity for deep conditioning). The shine it imparts is nothing short of brilliant, and it leaves my face feeling so wonderfully nourished and moisturized (hemp oil contains natural humectants which improve skin's elasticity and circulation). Truly a workhorse from a performance standpoint.
The Bottom Line
If you are looking to try a really great example of a hemp based beard care product that will take your mane to levels you didn't even think possible, this is definitely a product worth checking out. Chronic Beard is doing a great job in erasing the last bits of certain stigmas that may surround hemp based proudcts, but more than that, they are doing a great job of creating really great quality beard care products. I don't know if there are any plans at Chronic Beard HQ to expand their lineup, but even with the small but mighty selection they currently offer, this is without a doubt a company that any serious beardsman needs to know about.
