My wife once told me "to know you is weird"...now some people might find that to be an insult, but within the context of the conversation I find that it's one of the most accurate observations about me that anybody has ever made. You see, we were talking about all of the strange and arbitary rules I have made for myself over the years, due to various OCD related superstitions that I don't even pretend to be embarassed about...some of my strangest include needing to purchase two new caps at the beginning of every baseball season, one to wear on game days and one to wear on days off...I also will only trim my nails on a monday because as a kid I read in a book that it's supposed to be lucky...and of course, I have beard-care related quirks too. One of my oldest beard-care related "rules" (and the reason I bring this up to begin with), is that I will only wear barbershop scents on days that I clean up the edges of my beard (I guess it has something to do with completing the entire sensory experience; a smooth, stubble free line, an osage rub induced tingle on my skin, and that great barbershop aroma filling my nostrils). To that effect, I usually only keep one barbershop scent in rotation at any given time, so when I finally ran out of my last one (the very worthwhile Double Tap by Skully's CTZ), I decided that I needed to pick up something very special to replace it with. My last experience with a product from The Bearded Fox was a great one, their Return of the Mack balm impressed me so much that I still use it pretty regularly to this day, which is why I dedided to try their barbershop offering. Promising to be a different experience than your typical barbershop scented beard oils, thanks to the addition of Bay Rum (which regular readers here already know is another favorite of mine), how will this stack up to the other barbershop scents I've tried? Let's check it out and see!
A barbershop experience so accurate that when you first smell it, you'd swear you can hear the sounds of lively chatter mingling with the hum of clipper motors, the game on the radio, and the whisk of shaving brushes against bowls in the back of your mind. From a heart of fresh, powder sporting a somewhat medicinal edge, this scent radiates outward, painting a picture in your mind's eye; evenly spaced mirrors hang on walls of mahogany and maple, a push broom sweeps hair clippings off of a checkerboard floor, and the talented hands of a well trained barber weild sharp scissors with a level of skill that only comes from years of practice. A sweet, dusty lavender blends with a soapy, almost laquered note to create an incredibly clean relaxing accord that when combined with the fresh powder perfectly captures the redolence of an old-school barbershop, like opening up a time capsule from a bygone era. This would be a brilliant scent in-and-of itself, but resonating on a parallel frequency, a crisp, lime-forward bay rum tinged with just the perfect amount of spice, provides an incredible depth that works as both a contrast to the sweet barbershop freshness, as well as a brilliant compliment to it; a snapshot of some impecably dressed and coiffed gentleman getting up from the heavy chair of leather and brass, ready to face the world after the ritualistic pampering that one can only get at the barbershop. Strength is solidly in between medium and medium-plus, and staying power is exceptional, detectable for a solid 8+ hours after application, every time I've worn it.
how does it work?
Not necessarily the most viscous oil I've ever tried, there is still a great heft to this product, allowing it to get deep into my beard all the way down to the skin. Absorption is incredible, and fast, leaving no greasiness at all after a quick comb through. An, unfussy and fairly straightforward carrier blend helps to impart a great softness and strength to my beard, and has my skin feeling moisturized and healthy all day long (you can thank the aloe leaf juice for that). The inclusion of quality argan lends incredible finishing properties to this oil, leaving my beard with a radiant shine that has me doing a double-take whenever I walk past a mirror. There's such a wonderful healthiness that both my beard and face feel whenever I use this product, that I have quickly come to consider it one of the more theraputic oils in my collection. Staying power is also incredible, with that great in-beard feel lasting all day long on a single application.
The bottom line
I haven't tried a ton of barbershop scents, but of the ones that I have, this is easily my favorite. Factoring in both the incredible performance and the awesome price, it's easy to see that The Bearded Fox has created an all around tremendous oil that definitely belongs in any well rounded beard-care collection. On a personal note, I just love the label on this oil, The Bearded Fox has a great aesthetic in general, but there's just something about the red, white, and blue circles in the background behind their awesome retro looking fox logo, that makes this one of the best looking beard oils on the market today. Just another reason to be excited about this incredible product!
