Lost in the shuffle of all the general insanity lately, is the fact that the majority of us find ourselves all dressed up with nowhere to go. Now, I mean, even when I'm not socially distancing, you can usually find me wearing jeans and a tee shirt, but that's not the kind of dressing up I'm talking about. Like any bearded guy worth the hairs on his face, I haven't let a little thing like staying home interrupt my beard-care routine, every day I meticulously wash (although lately I've been doing a co-wash daily...In fact, I've been compiling a co-washing journal, and I am kicking around the idea of writing a piece on some observations I've made on the subject, nothing groundbreaking, but still interesting...maybe next week...or maybe not at all, no promises...we'll see...anyway...I'm getting off topic here), comb, and apply produtcts to my beard, even though I don't plan on leaving the house. Because even though beard-care improves one's outward apperance, it's still has a ton of important benefits beyond just making us look great; keeping our beard and face in excellent health. Even though we may all be hanging around the house in our sweats until noon, this is still no time to skimp on pampering that luxurious mane, which is why I was super excited to recieve such a generous package from Sphinx a few weeks back. I've been positively loving their Chokecherry shave soap on days when the edges of my beard and neck need cleaning up, and the matching balm is the stuff of dreams...but I just recently started using their Chokecherry oil. Now, I've made it abundantly clear that I find their Authentic Oud oil to be one of the absolute best beard-care products (not just oils) that I've ever used, which of course means it casts a pretty big shadow over their other oil offerings. How will this stuff stack up to it's 100-point cousin? Only one way to find out...let's give it a try!
As is to be expected, it's a very similar profile to the Chokecherry balm. A brilliant tribute to Tom Ford's Lost Cherry scent, dripping with sensual appeal, and luxurious charm. A skillfull retelling of of one of the more popular scents on the market today, Chokecherry presents itself as sweet, bitter, and juicy all at once, with a leathery ghost in the background that feels both rugged and incredibly refined. Strong notes of marinated black cherry (not the bright red dyed "maraschino" cherries you remember from the ice cream sundaes of your childhood, but honest to goodness home made cherries macerated in Maraschino liqueur, full of sweet syruppy goodness), sway back and forth bewtween light whisps of marzipan and something that reminds me of pink Starburst candies. Just below thie surface, fresh, crisp florals join a clean powdery note to rise from a backbone of shredded bark, sweet potting soil, and shoe leather, all anchored by a familiar, comforting tonka bean note. A bold, luxurious accord that feels a bit more "traditional" than the scent that inspired it (if that makes any sense), perfect for both every day use as well as for a night out (whenever we get one of those again). Strength is perfectly medium, making this an ideal layering parther for a great many balms and butters...if you want to play up the cherry scent, the combination of this oil with the incredible Wild Man butter by Tailored Beard Company is tough to beat...but personally, my favorite is the comindation of this oil with the downright amazing The 18th Mack butter by The Bearded Mack, the two come together to make a lively, zesty accord that makes me feel like I'm throwing back overpriced cocktails in the lounge of some upscale urban restaurant where the glitterati come to stuff themselves with the latest trends in cutting-edge gastronomy. Staying power is very good, detectable 6 hours or more after application every time I've worn it.
How does it work?
With the same medium-plus viscosity as the Authentic Oud oil that turned me into such a fan of Sphinx in the first place, this stuff does an incredible job of getting deep down into my beard, delivering a laundry list of beneficial carriers that have both my beard and face feeling absolutely amazing. The one-two punch of both marula and moringa oils provide a ton of moisturization, while castor and hemp seed oils help conditon and leave both my beard and face looking and feeling incredibly healthy. In-beard feel is also outstanding; light-weight and non greasy, with rapid absorption. Every ingredient in this oil seems to be of an incredibly high quality level, each working in concert with one another to deliver an all around top-notch experience. Finishing properties are stupendous, leaving my beard with a radiant, star-bright shimmer that serves as a great confidence booster every time I walk past a mirror. Staying power is incredible, providing moisturization for my beard and face all day long on a single application!
The bottom line
I already knew this product wouldn't let me down, but I really needed to try it in order to appreciate how truly awesome it is. Bursting at the seams with quality ingredients, this is no run-of-the-mill beard oil, this stuff belongs on the top shelf. The scent is also incredible, while not a completely faithful reproduction of Lost Cherry, it clearly takes inspiration from it and is able to turn that inspiration into a brilliant and distinctive scent all its own. It goes without saying that I cannot recommend this stuff highly enough; a dynamic scent paired with a top notch oil, truly something that no well rounded beard-care arsenal should be without!
