As Timbaland once said, "It's been a long time...we shouldn't have left you...without a dope beat to step to..." (good luck getting that song out of your head now, BTW)...well, I don't make beats, but it definitely feels like in the down-time between reviews, the world has gone a little crazy, and maybe now more than ever, it's important to keep the fresh online content rolling in. Let's see, no more NBA, NHL, March Madness, theme parks, and perhaps the unkindest cut of all is the fact that Spring Training has ended early and the start of the MLB season has been postponed. It seems like now more than ever I need to bring the best possible content to my readers (I mean, where else can we get our entertainment right now if not from the sites we frequent, right?). Well Sphinx is going to help me deliver some all new content today. You see, a few weeks ago they reached out to me, after reading my review of their Authentic Oud beard oil (which is an oil everybody should own, BTW), and offered me the absolute pleasure of reviewing some of their other products. This is the first product from that I decided to grab from the extremely generous shipment that they sent me (well, not entirely true, they sent me a matching shave soap that I used first, but I've only tried it once, so I havent been able to come up with a solid review of that just yet). I've actually been wanting to try the balm offerings from Sphinx for a while now, so lets take this stuff for a spin and see what we think!
If you're a fan of Scent #6 from BrokeAss, you'll love this stuff...and it stands to reason as they were both inspired by Lost Cherry by Tom Ford. Although, there's definitey something about this formulation, that makes it a distinct scent, all its own. A big, heady cologne of a scent, capturing delicious fruity gourmands, and sophisticated intreague into one brilliant intertwining blend of sweet notes. A sparkling dreamscape built of marascino cherries and gold dust, this scent conjures up images of pure luxury with the occasional single frame of deep passion or lighthearted fun thrown in from time to time just to trigger your subconscious. Sweet cherry syrup softly caresses fresh, ripe Bing cherries as they dance in a warm amaretto scented breeze on a calm sea of kirsh. A green, almost chemical (but in the best possible way, like the skin of an underripe mango) wraps around a light pleasant ever so slightly earth-tinged floral, that reminds me of hibiscus tea. A sturdy, structured note of tonka bean mingles with a sweet dried date accord that delivers a ton of personality and further bolsters the overall gourmand feel of this scent. Strength sits wonderfully in between medium and medium plus. Staying power is very good, detectable a solid 6-8 hours after application, every time I've worn it. Being a fruit based scent this balm definitely plays well with others, but if youre looking for an absolute treat, I highly recommend layering this over The Fantastic Bastard by Luxurious Bastard.
How does it work?
A soft, almost jelly-like balm that could honestly pass for a beard butter, this product has a great, low melting point that requires minimal effort to liquefy. In-beard feel is fantastic, very lightweight and non-greasy (absorption is perhaps the best I've ever experienced with a balm). Avocado oil and mango butter impart a wonderful softness as well as a brilliant, healthy strength to my beard. Occlusive properties are outstanding, moisturizing both my beard and face wonderfully. Hold is better than I was expecting from such a soft butter (that's most likely thanks to the generous helping of kokum butter in this product), although I do find that on days when my beard insists on misbehaving, this stuff isn't quite enough to get it to fall in line. Protection levels are also quite impressive, I wore this balm to a baseball game that ended up getting rained out, and it was able to stand up as well as can be expected when subjected to rains of varying intensity levels, I also wore it out to shoot sporting clays, and even after walking the entire course through mountain terrain on a chilly afternoon, my beard was feeling amazing! Staying power is excellent, delivering that great in-beard feel all day long on a single application.
The bottom line
Sphinx is an awesome company all-around, from what is quite possibly the best packaging and presentation in the beard-care game, to the amazing scents and exacting levels of quality when it comes to the products inside, these guys don't do anything cut-rate. This balm is just further proof of that, offering outstanding performance, there's nothing about this product that doesn't scream quality. Sporting a price tag similar to many other great balms out there, this is definitely a balm that I have no issues with recommending, especially for all fans of Tom Ford, or those who just enjoy a great cherry-based scent!
