Sometimes you need to try multiple offerings from a specific label to really get the feel for what they're all about. The last Real Bearded Men product I tried, left me less than blown away (at least from a scent prespective), but I recognized that since this stuff is hand-made in small-batches, with ingredients that seemed to be very high-quality, there was definite potential there, and I wasn't willing to completely write them off just yet. Knowing that their oils are almost universally loved, I decided to pick one that I thought seemed the most unusual...and unusual is exactly what I got here. This is the first beard oil containing Dead Sea salt (you already know I'll be going over the benefits of this stuff a little later) on the market, so I had to give it a try...let's see if this will be the product to get me to join the Real Bearded Men fanclub...
Scent is one of the strongest senses tied to memory, and this stuff really stirs up some serious nostalgia for me. This is definitely more of a "young man's" scent, but that doesn't mean us old toads can't enjoy the stroll down memory lane that this stuff facilitates. Heady, hypnotic notes of manicured, sticky, sativa buds, perfectly cured and ready to render their mind expanding magic, dominate the initial bouquet in all their earthy, herbal glory...but those of us who no longer partake in the devil's lettuce (called that ironically, of course...no judgement from me, if you still get down at any age) needn't worry about smelling like a red-eyed, giggling teenager, as this scent is tempered by a wonderfuly energized lemongrass/citrus note that provides a sophisticated balance of clean, crispness that really boosts this scent to an entirely different level of dimensionality. Resinous, mellow, musky tones work brilliantly in concert with bright citrus, as camphoraceous and earthy notes gracefully dance in silliage. Such a carefree, laid back scent, this is probably best suited for summertime; long drives up the coast, beer and oysters on the beach, outdoor concerts...this scent stirs up memories of them all. Strength is just a tick above medium-plus at first, but quickly calms down to a medium, where it remains for most of the day.
How does it work?
If you read this page regularly, you already know what a huge fan I am of using hemp oil as a medium in in beard-care products; The list of benefits for your face and beard is too long to go over in its entirety, but it's packed full of vital protiens, as well as linoleic and oliec acids that assist in reducing fine lines and wrinkles (I actually use a hempseed based beard oil by Brooklyn Grooming as a face serum from time to time). The Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids also not only stimulate hair growth, but also strengthen your beard to prevent breakage. Suffice it to say that stopping right here would already make this an outstanding oil, but then the good folks at Real bearded Men doubled down by adding Dead Sea salt. Harvested from the Dead Sea in Israel, this stuff boasts a ridiculously high mineral content, magnesium, calcium, sulfur, bromide, sodium, potassium and iodine are all present, which acording to scientific research have innumerable benefits for skin and hair (here is a really geeky, scientific paper written by people a lot smarter than me, which will give you a great breakdown of all the benefits of this salt, if you're interested). Those who suffer beard itch/dandruff will be super jazzed to know that Dead Sea salt is prized for its inflammation reducing and hydration boosting properties. I also find that if you use a sea salt spray in your beard, this stuff only serves to enhance body all that much more. Needless to say, this product makes my face feel great. Conditioning properties are excellent too, leaving my beard feeling soft, thick, and strong. Staying power is just right, requiring no touch-ups in any of the times I've used it.
The Bottom Line
This is a really good oil. The novelty of its ingredients might be enough to get you to want to try it, but the performance is good enough to make you want to keep using it. The scent probably isn't for everybody, but it's definitely nice when youre looking for a more playful change of pace on those days when you dont necessarily need a challenge from your scent choice (it also pairs really well with a wide variety of colognes). Real Bearded Men has definitely created something awesome here, and considering the fact that it's stuffed to the gills with top-quality ingredients at a price point that is right around the industry average, it also represents a tremendous value!
