In writing for this site for a couple of months now, I've noticed that i havent paid quite as much attention to the smaller independent brands out there. I've reviewed a couple, and almost always find their quality to be on par with, or many times above, that of the bigger well-established names. One of these brands that recently came to my attention is Miner's Beard, named for the West Virginia coal country out of which they are based, this newer company offers an impressive suite of products in a wide variety of scents. Priding themselves on using all natural ingredients, they offer value priced products designed with the hard-working beardsman in mind. I decided to pick up one of their oils after reading the impressive list of ingredients stated on their website, it looked like something that could compete with products that sported a much higher price tag...let's give it a try and find out if it can...
I don't really know what I was expecting, but I know it wasnt something as awesome as this. Miner's Beard has really done something special here. A strong green, presence dripping with resinous sap, supports a dry, structured tambark component, while a bittersweet, astringent lichen lends a serene, woodsiness. This is balanced beautifully by a jammy, sparkling berry that gracefully rides the midnote and lends a sort of "Christmas-y" quality to this overall scent, while a slightly ammoniac "leafy" high note rounds everything out and adds just the perfect amount of damp, "outdoorsiness". There is an incredible amount of nuance in this product, to the nose, it reads more like a fancy European soap in an expensive hotel suite, than your typical beard oil fragrance. Ruggedly masculine, while still maintaining a beautiful gentleness that many strive for, but few achieve...it's at once celebratory and playfull, and seriously brooding. Something that goes far beyond the expectations set by most men's grooming products. Strength is on the medium-plus side, just perfect to surround you in a brilliant bubble of this awesome aroma, and staying power is fantastic, so those you walk by will get to enjoy the amazing silliage left by this product well into the late afternoon.
How does it work?
I purchased this product based on the ingredients list alone, and I must say that the performance does not dissapoint. My three favorite carrier oils (castor, avocado, and hempseed) are all represented, instantly imparting an extremely healthy feel to my face, and strength to my beard. Viscosity is solidly medium, my beard just drinks this stuff up right away, leaving no greasy feel, just an awesome lustre that makes everything look as healthy as it feels! Staying power is good, but I do notice the need for a touchup on days where I spend a little more time outdoors. The phenominal softness and conditioning that this product offers make it the perfect oil to use before a thicker, more nourishing butter (I have been a huge fan of the one-two punch of this oil paired with the awesomeness of Detroit Grooming's Black Amber Butter, lately).
The bottom line
This is a tremendous product. From a value standpoint it's downright unbeatable, I have products in my collection that cost almost 4 times as much that do not smell or perform nearly as amazingly as this oil. I cannot recommend this stuff highly enough, and am beyond excited to see what else Miner's Beard Co has to offer. They may be one of the newer kids on the block, but if this company continues to offer this level of quality at such great prices, they will surely become a big name player in the beard care game before long!
