If you're a Champagne drinker, the name Krug is one that instantly stirs up some excitement within you. Founded in 1843, they are widely considered one of the greatest Champagne houses in the history of grape fermentation. Now, if you read this site regularly, you'll know that this isn't the first time that I have compared Luxurious Bastard to a producer of high-end wines, but I bring up Krug, because they are something of an oddity among elite Champagne producers. You see, where many of the other big guys produce something called a Prestige Cuvée (The offering that a particular Champagne house deems to be their absolute best...most famous of which being Cristal by Louis Roederer, but I'm sure you've also heard of Dom Perignon by Moët et Chandon, and La Grande Dame by Veuve Clicquot), Krug considers every Champagne they make to be a Prestige Cuvée. With their catalogue of high end offerings, that sell out quickly, and occupy the top shelves of the collections of every dude who owns their products, it could be said that every Luxurious Bastard product is the beard-care equivalent of a Prestige Cuvée, but, just as Krug produces a couple of very rare offerings that are even more highly coveted than everything else they make, Luxurious Bastard also makes an offering so stupendous and rare that it only becomes available for sale a precious few times a year. I was able to score a tin of 2020's first release of Legendary Bastard balm...does this stuff push the already incredibly high bar set by other Luxurious Bastard offerings, just that much higher? Only one way to find out...let's give it a try...
Sporting an oud scent, everything about this balm seemed like something that I would enjoy right off the blocks. Definitely a unique fragrance that showcases an the inclusion of an oud of incredibly high standard. An absolutely spectacular evocation of one of my all-time favorite scents, this stuff exhudes quality and depth. The initial shock of boozy, resinous, dark, almost medicinal sweetness that typifies and good oud product seems to hold the door open for a wonderful, green, sappiness that adds a fresh and airy quality that you usually just don't find in scents this complex. Hovering gracefully above all of this is a gorgeous, damp agarwood note that further bolsters the overall high quality feeling of this scent, and seems to morph into an almost breezy floral note that weaves itself into a magical smokiness that embodies the timeless, enigmatic mystry of all the best oud fragrances. Strength is a shade above medium plus, and staying power is phenominal, easily lasting 6-8 hours on a single application.
How does it work?
I was unable to find a precise ingredients list on this particular balm, but something tells me that the formulation might be slightly different from some of the other balms I've tried from Luxurious Bastard. it seems to be a bit softer, and it definitely melts easier. it has a very "fine" feel in my hands, no oiliness or stickiness that even some of the best balms can have when they are melted down, but rather an incredible, lightweight, downright silky, tactile slip that makes this product incredibly easy to work into my beard. If the formulation of this product is different than that of other Luxurious Bastard balms, I don't think Mr Lux omitted any of the high end carriers that he usually includes, as conditioning properties are outstanding, and in-beard feel is incredible. This balm really seem to do a tremendous job of sealing in whatever oil it was paired with (if you're looking for an absolutely incredible experience, I highly recommend using this stuff in conjunction with the incredible Oud oil by Sircar Grooming, which is something of a legendary product in its own right). Hold is also outstanding, offering enough control to tame flyaways, and keep my beard looking outstanding, even on its most unruly of days. Staying power is, as to be expected by a Luxurious bastard product, fantastic...offering that wonderful in-beard feel all day long!
The bottom line
Rare and exotic, the best oud products are something downright magical and transformative, this balm is no exception. With one of the most high-quality oud scents, and performance that is perhaps the best I've ever experienced from one of Mr Lux's balms, this stuff not only lived up to my every expectation, but it far surpassed them. A balm for the ages, that unfortunately just isn't available all that often...but the next time this stuff drops, if you're even a little bit "on the fence" about adding it to your beard care arsenal, just grab it, there is no question that it will quickly become one of your all-time favorites. There may be some initial sticker-shock when compared to other balms out there, but this is definitely one of those cases of getting what you pay for! This level of quality is worth every penny!
