After trying The Legend beard oil by Live Bearded, I was left feeling like there was something that I was missing about this brand...their oil is good, but there was nothing that I found to be particularly exceptional about it. After doing a bit more homework, on this brand, it seems that the general consensus is that their specialty is definitely their beard butter. With that in mind, I decided to give this product a try, will it live up to the hype? Or will it leave me as underwhelmed as their oil? Let's check it out and see...
This product seems to be a much better example of a sandalwood and vanilla blend than their oil was. Still not anything too terribly multi-dimensional, but you can definitely sense what they were going for here. A great, warm, creamy, almost dusty sandalwood base supports deep, rich vanilla bean that lacks the sweetness that one might come to expect form a typical vanilla fragrance. There's an unctuous, almost fatty component which I'm assuming is a bit of the carrier blend shining through. Nothing that will turn heads or draw a ton of compliments, but definitely a very no-frills, pleasant scent that reads as incredibly clean, and doesn't interfere with whatever cologne you happen to be wearing that day. Strength is solidly medium. Staying power is fine, it doent really hang around for too long, but being a fairy basic scent, this is actually a good thing, as it doesn't overstay it's welcome.
How does it work?
This butter has a wonderful, dense texture, it reminds me of cookie dough in its solid form (the vanilla scent might have something to do with that however). This is deceptive though as when you work a bit in between your palms to warm it up, you'll notice that it melts into an wonderfully lightweight consistency, that works into the beard with incredible ease. It combs through brilliantly, coating every individual beard hair . This product really seems to impart an almost instant softness and strength (this could be due to the inclusion of avocado oil), it also seems to help seal in whatever oil you choose to use beforehand brilliantly. There does seem to be a bit of a "cool down" period after applying this butter, meaning that it doesn't set right away, but when it does, it holds really well, offering one of the higher levels of control I've ever experienced from a beard butter.
The bottom line
After trying their beard butter, it's easy to see why Live Bearded enjoys having a reputation as one of the premier names in beard care products. This is a very impressive example of a product that just plain works. From a scent stand point, it's far from interesting (although it's definitely still pleasant, which counts for something), but the awesome performance more than makes up for that. Definitely a product worthy of a place in any serious beardsman's lineup.
