Grave Before shave has been one of those companies that I've known about for as long as I can remember buying beard care products, it seems like they hit the scene with a vengance upon their debut in 2013...but for whatever reason, I never really paid much attention to their products. As luck would have it, I was running low on my every-day balm when I saw a really cool ad they were running on Facebook the other day, I decided to say "what the hell?" and give their balm a try. Will it be good enough to replace my daily "go to" balm? Lets find out...
I don't smoke as many cigars as I used to, but I still enjoy a good smoke once or twice a week. There's definitely a rich tobacco note in this balm, but it reminds me a bit more of a spicy pipe tobacco, or even that smell when you first walk into a tobacco store, not specifically reminiscent of any one particular cigar, but just high quality tobacco in general. The vanilla note is a bit more prominent, and you really need to like vanilla to appreciate this (I do enjoy vanilla quite a bit, but if you dont, it might be a bit much for you). Staying power is tremendous, after combing just a little bit of this balm through your beard, you'll find yourself spending the rest of the day surrounded by a really pleasant tobacco and vanilla scent that seems to evole and get even richer as the hours pass.
How does it work?
When you first scoop this balm out, the thing that will immediately grab your attention is how stiff it is, it feels almost like a beard wax at first, but it warms quickly in your hands, and goes on very smoothly. Hold is great, taming flyaways, and keeping everything in place. It does feel just the slightest bit too greasy at first, but honestly not enough to be a problem, and it really becomes no issue at all a few minutes after application (I always use the amount of residue left on my cell phone screen after taking a call as a way of measuring the greasiness of a product, and I'm happy to say that this balm leaves no embarassing beard print at all).
The bottom line
I'm sort of kicking myself that I have known about this brand for as long as I have, without trying them. This balm will definitely become part of my everyday rotation...and if youre looking for a great quality balm, that smells amazing, and doesnt break the bank, you may want to consider making it a part of yours too.
