It's no secret that I really enjoy Fresh Beards products, I've yet to try anything that they make which is short of outstanding. They offer their top shelf oils, balms, and butters in a wide range of scents, so many in fact, that it would be easy to get overhwhelmed when trying to pick just one. To help make that decision easier, lately they have been offering certain scent bundles at prices too good to refuse. As you might be able to guess from my Dark Roast Oil review, this was the other half of that bundle. The oil definitely lived up to the high standards set by Fresh Beards, but will the butter do the same? Let's give it a try and find out.
I have to be honest here, I didnt even open this butter until a few days ago. I just sort of assumed that it would be about the same as the oil, and figured that it wouldnt need a ton of dissection. Unfortunately, this stuff doesnt possess quite the same dimensionality that the oil did. Where the oil offered an ever evolving picture of deep, rich, coffee served piping hot and black as night, the butter just has more of a coffee-like scent, reminiscent of coffee ice cream, or those weird coffee-rio hard candies that you get after dinner in some so-so restaurants. I mean, it's okay, it's coffee-ish but it honestly lacks the "wow" factor that the oil has. There's also a sort of unpleasant burnt note that reminds me of spilling something on a really hot stove burner. I really wanted to like this scent, and sort of automatically assumed that I would, but after a couple days of wearing it, I have to say that it's just okay...not the worst, but far from the best scent I've experienced from a brand that I always have high hopes for. Strength is medium-plus for most of the day, but calms down to a solid medium as the afternoon turns into evening. Staying power is decent...which, I mean, drfinitely indicates that the ingredients in this stuff are quality, but the execution is just not on par with other Fresh Beards scents.
How does it work?
Performance is similar to that of their 1920 butter (which should come as no surprise). A bit too thin to be called a "thick" butter, but definitely that great shea based consistency that we know and love from Fresh Beards butters. Conditioning is exceptional, the avocado oil content really seems to be the star here, making my beard feel extremely full and healthy, and my face feel extra moisturized (this is especially important with the chappy, cool time of year upon us). Hold is medium (I may be crazy, but I swear this doesnt hold quite as good as the 1920, butter...I may have to use the two on back to back days, and verify this). As with all Fresh beards products, there is absolutely no greasiness left behind by this stuff, and staying power is decent, requiring no touchups on most days.
The bottom line
This is a product that definitely offers the super high quality and performance that we've come to know and love from Fresh Beards, but I would be lying if I didn't point out that the scent does leave something to be desired. I think if I had tried this product before I tried their Dark Roast oil, I might not feel quite as let down by the lack of multi-dimensionality in the scent of this butter...but be that as it may, it's still not the worst smelling thing in the world, and while I would stop short of recommending this product at full retail, when sold as part of a value-bulnde, it certainly represents a low-risk investment.
