One of the more highly touted butters on just about every blog and YouTube channel dedicated to beard care. Fresh Beards seems to have established themselves as one of the premiere names in beard butter. As I've discussed before, I like to have a full suite of barbershop scented products to use on that one day a week when I plop a new blade in my safety razor and clean up the edges of my beard and neck, so it only stands to reason that I'd like to incorporate a great butter into that routine. Is 1920 the key piece I was missing to round out my shave day routine? Or is Fresh Beards butter all hype? Lets check it out and see...
So obviously the scent of a "barbershop" can be a little tough to nail down. I have tried a lot of different barbershop scents, and find that they run a pretty wide gamut, some are medicinal, some are clean, some are powdery...but a good barbershop scent has the power to conjure up mental images of a perfectly worn in barber chair, John Wayne posters, and gentlemen's magazines, with just a single whiff...I find that this product definitely evokes some of those for me, it's a fresh, clean scent reminiscent of the Pinaud Clubman talc, ubiquituous in every barbershop. There is also a sweet component that rides the line between floral and soapy (maybe some old school shave soap?), which seems to make its presence felt a bit more as the day goes by. The strength level is great, enough to be noticable, but not overpowering (it really seems to compliment my cologne nicely, creating an air of freshness that is extremely pleasent on hot summer days). Longevity is about average, it doesn't wear off too quickly, but you probably wont notice it too deep into the afternoon.
How does it work?
The consistency of this product is a bit hard to describe...some butters are soft and watery (like the one by Beard Guyz...with a "z"), some are stiffer and almost pomade like (like the one by Detroit Grooming Co)...This is sort of a hybrid of the two, It scoops out a bit stiff, but quickly emulisfies into a soft, smooth elixir that works easily into your beard. I would guess that this product has a fairly high shea content as it really seems to nourish your beard from root to tip while also penetrating deeply down to the skin, and never leaving any greasy residue. This stuff offers a medium amount of hold, and will have your beard fealing healthy and moisturized throughout the course of the day with no need for an oil touchup later on.
The bottom line
This is a really great product that is deserving of the high praise it constantly recieves. While the 1920 scent may not be for everybody (I'd say you really have to be into barbershop scents for this one), it definitely delivers on its promise to trigger memories of an old school barbershop. It doesnt matter if youre a big fan of beard butters (like me), or are still just wading out into the waters of beard butter, this awesome product definitely needs a space in your beard care arsenal.
