I was impressed with the last product by Fable Beard Co that I tried, their Gunslinger Oil proved to be a great smelling blend that has earned a place in my everyday rotation. As I continue to set my lineup of products to use this autumn, I find myself gravitating more towards "cologne type" scents...as I've discussed before, "cologne type" is such a vague description, I mean, think of all the colognes you've ever smelled in your life...that's a pretty broad spectrum, isn't it? Of course, I'm being a bit obtuse right now, as I've generally come to understand that "cologne type" to mean warm, musky, amber driven scents that skew very masculine in nature. My previous good experience with Fable compelled me to check out their "cologne type" offering, dubbed The Hero. Lets give it a try and see if this confirms my impression that Fable products are awesome, shall we?
So I wasn't quite sure about this one at first, it just seemed a bit sweet and one-dimensional at first sniff...but give it a little time to develop and you will be greatly rewarded. Warm a few drops in your hands and layers upon layers envelop you as you comb this stuff through your beard; huge green tobacco notes, mix with a sweet pink pepper that borders on floral...propped up by sturdy notes of rich labdanum, and a dry warm bourbon barrel note that yields to a leathery, animalistic finish that is nothing short of intoxicating. To call this a "cologne type" scent almost does it a disservice, as it is so much more complex than the description implies...then again, this would make an insanely great smelling cologne, so maybe the product elevates the description? Strength is a shade above medium (I wish it were slightly more intense, but that's just a matter of personal preference). Staying power is decent (I've worn it for a few days and notice that it always seems to fade away after the first two hours or so).
How does it work?
Just as with my review of The Gunslinger, this is a good quality oil, but I just wish it were a bit thicker. It definitely requires a reapplication or two throughout the day. That being said, I'm always a fan of oils that include castor oil, the omega 6 fatty acids really seem to leave my beard feeling extra healthy, and this stuff must contain a good bit of it, because it imparts a downright luxurious feel to my beard, as well as the skin underneath it. It definitely absorbs nicely without leaving even the slightest trace of a greasy feeling, and imparts a great healthy luster that will give any beard that great "finished" look.
The bottom line
I was extremely unfamiliar with Fable the first time I tried their products, they definitely exceeded my initial expectations. This time around I came in knowing a bit more what to expect, and they still managed to exceed my expectations. This is one of the most awesome smelling oils in the "cologne type" category, and the product performs really well too (as was the case with my previous Fable oil review, if this were a bit thicker, it would be nothing short of legendary). I have no doubts that if future Fable products perform as well as the two oils I've tried, I'll be making regular space for them in my daily rotations.
