"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed."
Quite possibly the greatest opening line to any novel ever, and the main factor in my decision to order this oil and give Fable Beard Company a try. A relative newcomer to the beardcare scene, Fable offers a wide variety of grooming products, each with a unique fantasy themed scent. The fun labels and cool names are enough to draw me in, will I be rewarded for judging a book by its cover? Let's give it a try and find out.
So, the website and the bottle both describe this product as a "futuristic patchouli"...I'm not quite sure what differentiates a futuristic patchouli from a regular one, but hey, that's marketing. It may be the power of suggestion, but this scent reminds me of the desert...a sweet, vegetal note reminiscent of white sage envelops a dry, masculine woodsy note conjuring up mental images of hadpainted wooden sign bleaching in the desert sun outside of an abandoned ghost town in an old time cowboy movie. Oddly enough, I dont get a ton of patchouli...I mean, it's there, but almost more just as a suggestion...just a light whiff of it to kind of round out the stronger components. As the day goes on, a very organic, almost earthy note starts to shine through, theres also an implacable component that borders on fruity which makes its presence felt at different points throughout the day, almost like a desert mirage...Strength is on the medium side (I'd be interested in trying this witht he matching balm to see if it doesnt boost the overall potency of this scent). I'm actually quite shocked by how complex this scent is.
How does it work?
Viscosity is pretty middle of the road, I wish it were just a bit thicker, because the blend of carrier oils seems to work really well with my skin. It feels great upon initial application, but I do notice that on hotter days (and living in the desert, I've been experiencing my fair share of those), it does seem to require a reapplication or two throughout the day. Conditioning properties are good, nothing extremely remarkable, but this oil definitely still does the job (again, I think if it were just a bit thicker, it might hang around in my beard longer and add just a bit more silkiness. It does leave a great shine on my beard after use, which I always take as a sign of a quality oil.
The bottom line
I decided to give this company a try on a whim, and I'm so glad that I did. This is a really good oil, with a unique scent. Something that would definitely fit nicely into an every day rotation. My only gripe is with the viscosity of this product, if it were a bit thicker, it would be nothing short of legendary, but even as it stands, it's a product that I recommend checking out.
