Ever since starting Vellus and Terminal, I find that my beard care buying habits have changed, I now constantly seek new products and labels rather than staying in my "safe zone" of products that I know and like. The results have been awesome as I have definitely discovered some gems. Every now an then, however, I don't have to search very far for a new product, it just finds me. Such is the case with this oil by Don Juan, I was approached by the proprietor of Enzull Men's Fine Groom Shop to see if I would like to try this line of oil. Enzull is a purveyor of top shelf men's grooming products, located in Miami, they stock everything you need to keep your grooming game on point. I was super excited that they introduced me to this line of products, Don Juan is a grooming company originally from Miami, but now based out of Southern California...best known for their premium water-based pomades, they have thrown their hats into the beard care ring with a suite of oils, suppliments, and washes formulated by industry leading scientists, boasting high quality ingredients and scents that promise to be nothing short of phenominal . Le'ts give this oil a try and see if it lives up to the lofty expectations that preceed it.
The Craftsmen blend is described as a "wood scent"...now, it has been my experience that this can mean just about anything, there are fresh evergreen scents that remind you of hiking in the forset, there are dry, lumber type scents that remind you of sunday mornings helping your dad in his woodshop, even exotic wood scents, smoky and mysterious that conjure up images of far away vacation destinations. They are all great in their own way, but they generally tend to lack much depth beyond the initial "woodiness"...this scent however, is a study in layers, It opens up with a straight forward dry, sawdust note extremely reminiscent of the Lumberyard Oil by Beardbrand. But as you warm this oil in your hands and work it through your beard, it opens up to become so much more complex, fresh split cedar logs stack up on top of a green pine boughs, while a smoky, spicy cypress starts out as a faint suggestion in the background, and then builds to a crescendo as the day progresses, all the while a rich, sweet note reminiscent of burning pimento wood just barely makes its presence felt in the highest of topnotes. There is just such an incredible freshness combined with a temendously deep, masculine essence that really elevates the concept of a classic "woodsy" scent to an entirely new level. Strength is solidly medium (in fact, I wish I were just a bit stronger). Staying power is outstanding, as it is still noticable for hours after application.
How does it work?
This is a weighty oil, not the thickest I've ever tried, but a solid medium-plus viscosity. It works evenly into my beard, and really seems to absorb nicely...but what I really want to talk about is the addition of Abyssinian oil, to this product. Not something that a lot of beardcare products incorporate (and I'm not entirely sure why), it is rich in Omega fatty acids and loaded with vitamins, this stuff is like a superfood for your skin and beard, leaving your face feeling supple and refreshed, and your mane feeling smooth as silk, with an incredible shine. The adition of squalane also helps seal moisture into the skin and beard, leaving my face feeling extra nourished and refreshed all day long. Longevity is outstanding, requiring no touchups throughout the course of a day (I haven't, yet worn it on a day when I spent a lot of time outside or doing any sort of strenuous activity, so your mileage may vary).
The Bottom Line
I wasn't really sure what to expect when I first tried this product, but I am so glad that I did. This is an extremely high quality oil that definitely deserves a spot on the top shelf. The combination of high end, all natural ingredients and an outstanding scent that really sets a new mark for its class have turned me into an instant fan of Don Juan products. Their pomades have gained a cult following, and I can only imagine that it will be a matter of time before their beard oils do to!
