Beards are so much more than a fashion statement, so a beardsman who isn't into fashion would be well forgiven not to recognize the name Beau Brummell. George Bryan Brummell (AKA Beau) was an Englishman who lived in the 18th century, known as a paragon of fashion he is responsibe for inventing the modern men's suit and tie combination (although this claim is somewhat dubious, but it makes for a good story either way). As the years became decades, and decades became centuries, Beau Brummell became a name that was synonimous with fashion and elegance. In 2013 that name was borrowed to grace a line of high end men's grooming products, complete with skincare, hair care, shaving, and even teeth whitening products. One item from this lineup that might be of particular interest to the bearded community is the cedarwood beard conditioner that we'll be checking out today. So, they call it a conditioner, but it's really an oil...confusing, I know...but not really, because one of the primary functions of a beard oil is to act as a conditioner, so this may just be an issue of semantics more than anything else. This sample was sent to me by our friends over at Enzull Men's Fine Groom Shop (definitely a place you'll want to check out if youre into high-end grooming products). Let's give this stuff a try and see how it stacks up...
An extremely straightforward scent, reminiscent of freshly ripped planks of red cedar. A softly green aroma with that unmistakable camphoraceous note that rides the line of erudite and rugged brilliantly. Strength is medium-minus-to-medium, could be stronger, but maybe it doesn't need to be (this is definitely a more sophisticated scent that doesnt insist on taking center stage). Staying power is fantastic, lasting for hours.
How does it work?
Now, any oil that eschews the title of oil to call itself a conditioner had better do one hell of a good job at conditioning, right? Well, I can say without a doubt that this oil excells in that category; a straightforward organic carrier blend of argon, jojoba, and vitamin E oil do a tremendous job of keeping my beard feeling super soft and managable, and nourishes the skin underneath beautifully. Viscosity is pretty middle of the road (you will need to reapply once or twice throughout the course of the day). This stuff imparts an exceptional shine (I'm assuming that this formulation includes copious amounts of top quality, organic argan oil). The quality ingredients assure that there is no greasy residue whatsoever (in fact, you can massage some into your face and neck for an extra soothing pick-me-up).
The bottom line
If you're looking for an extremely unfussy oil that just plain works, with a scent that is awesome but unobtrusive, then this stuff is for you. The price tag may be a turnoff to some, but would you really expect a product sporting the name of one of the pillars of men's fashion to be cheap?
