Over the past couple of weeks, I've been reviewing my way through the entire catalogue of beard-care offerings from Baroque Royal. So far, every product I've tried with their signature gold logo on the package has been outstanding (including non beard-specific things, like their phenominal face lotion, heavenly eye gel, which I use every day...and amazing travel humidor which does an exceptional job at keeping some of my favorite Opus X cigars in optimum condition when I need to bring them with me on-the-go). I've already been absolutely blown away by one of their beard cleansers, their beard soap proved to be such an amazing beard wash product that I was almost a bit hesitant to try their beard shampoo, as I wasn't sure how it could match the incredible performance of their soap. But duty calls, (and besides, it's not like I've ever been let down by this awesome brand), so let's give this stuff a try and see what we think...
When is a scent more than a scent? When it has the power to more than just draw up mental images of a time and place but rather, transport you there. This particular permutation of Ocean Blue resembles a more intense version of the beard soap bar. Since this is such a similar scent to all of the other Baroque Royal products, there's really no need for me to get into how this is an idyllic beach scent that opens up into a romantic world of luxury seaside resorts, expensive vintage Champagne, and a feeling of peace and serenity that only comes from a day spent lounging lazily by the ocean. But...it is worth going over some of the finer points of this scent for those just joining us. A bracing, chalky mineral opening explodes into a cool, oceanic redolence brimming with kelp, cucumber, hyacinth, and bright, ripe, satsuma. Brisk salt water and nose tickling ozone carry you away to a foggy coastal morning where all is still and quiet, before lazily fading into a plush clean linen accord that dances and spins in the high note with the grace of a feather in the wind. Sporting a sophisticated, relaxed vibe, this scent has the power to turn a quick shower into a luxurious dive into the ocean. Strength is wonderfully medium-plus, and it does seem to faintly stick around in my beard even after stepping out of the shower, making it ideal to layer with all of the other Baroque Royal beard-care products, or other aquatic scents.
How does it work?
Deep cleansing and luxuriously foaming, it becomes instantly evident that this is a hard working cleanser. While the addition of SLS to the formulation may be a bit of a turnoff to some, it is worth noting that if you rotate this among several other washes, it really shouldnt have any impact one way or another (My skin is notoriously sensitive to such things, and I've yet to experience any dryness or breakouts using this product). That aside, this stuff does a tremendous job of cleansing dirt, sweat, and excess buildup, while still leaving my beard feeling voluminous, soft, and managable. It rinses cleanly and with minimal effort, and leaves absolutely no tangles or broken hairs for my comb to contend with when I step out of the shower. It also helps impart a very healthy shine on days when I use it. All in all a tremendous effort, and just another reason to be excited about this amazing company!
The bottom line
The outstanding level of care and quality that Baroque Royal puts into their products becomes more and more evident with each and every one of their offerings that I try. While personally, I think I slightly prefer their beard soap over their beard shampoo (and that is in no way a criticism of this shampoo, that soap is just, honestly, one of the best beard wash products I've tried in my life) Those who prefer the convenience of a liquid will become instant fans of this stuff after trying it. The scent is on the same level of amazing of all the other products in this lineup, and performance is on par (if not a bit better) than many other washes in this price range. Now one quirk about this product worth noting, is that you can not purchase it by itself...you need to get it as part of a combo pack with the matching conditioner, or in the luxury grooming kit, which contains every Baroque Royal product I've reviewed on this page to date, in addition to a super high quality wooden beard comb (that I use every day) and a luxurious boars hair brush. That being said, both of these sets are priced incredibly reasonably, so you shouldn't hesitate to pick either up, especially the Luxury Grooming Kit, as that will give you the opportunity to see for yourself how absolutely outstanding these products, and this company truly are!
