It seems like, no matter who you are, the day to day grind can just get to you after a while. Maybe it's a work thing, a money thing, or your check engine light just came on and you don't have the time to look into it...maybe the news has got you down, or you forgot to get that birthday card for your mother in the mailbox, heck, it can be something as ridiculous as a bad beard trim, or that dumb thing you said fifteen years ago in front of some prople you don't even hang out with anymore...no matter what it is, we all have those things that bounce around in our brains, usually when we lay down in bed at night, robbing us of prescious sleep time. Well, Big Tex, proprietor of Barn Brand Beards and all around good dude, has just the thing to ease those worries, while keeping your beard looking and feeling its best. Ever the master of blending high quality and interesting scents, he's taken things a step further by infusing top shelf aromatherapy into his awesome beard butter. Now, as a bit of an undercover neurotic type, my interest was definitely piqued by this stuff. Will this become my new secret weapon to quieting all of the worries and helping me get a good nights sleep? Let's take it for a spin and find out...
What we're dealing with here...is really a different approach to beard-care scents; a big time, in-your-face blend designed to be as functional as it does smell good (we'll discuss function in the next section). A bold bouquet that reads like an uplifting perfume, a joyful middle finger to all the ghosts and goblins that rattle around in the back of your psyche, it's somewhat difficult to isolate each individual component of this scent, instead it reads like a jazz orchestra. Brimming with enough fresh, relaxing lavender to have a coffee guzzling insomniac sawing logs in no time, this scent instantly declares itself as a night-time butter. But if all Tex were to do was load this stuff with lavender, it definitely wouldn't carry the artistic hallmarks that we've come to know and appreciate from Barn Brand, instead this is designed to be an interesting ride deep into the heart of dreamland. A heavy, fruity, intensely floral ylang ylang takes this scent in to the realm of the untraditional, almost feminine, while sturdy notes of cedar and ho wood, temper the big time florals with a decidedly masculine chord that provides a brilliant contrasting underpinning. A green, vibrant, vetiver with its grassy, minty bitterness, lends a lively effervescence that opens up an entire new level for this scent...and yet, just beyond these very big and intense notes vanilla, chamomile, and marjoram play a calm relaxing lullaby that beautifully anchors the fresh lively upfront redolence. A warm almost powdery note rises like the steam from a cup of bed-time tea to gently relax your every muscle. Perhaps the most magnificent night-time scent I've ever encountered! Strength is high and intense, just the thing you need for some big time aromatherapy, and staying power is fantastic, with that great relaxing scent still detectable upon waking up the following morning.
How does it work?
With a texture just slightly softer than the amazing Arnie Palmer butter that I had reviewed a while back, this is a serious product that could be used during the day just as well as at night. Jam packed with some of my favorite beneficial ingredients, not the least of which is Jamaican black castor, this stuff delivers nourishment, as well as awesome moisturization. In-beard feel is absolutely epic, imparting a wonderful softness that I can feel instantly after my night-time brushing...absorption is fantastic, leaving behind absolutely zero greasy feel, which will keep your pillowcases free of any nasty beard butter stains that may have been an issue with other night time products you may have tried. This is an all around tremendous butter, but what I really want to talk about in terms of functionality are the incredible aromatheraputic properties of this stuff. Now, you might be a bit sceptical of claims that just smelling certain scent combinations can change your mood, but spend a few minutes stuck in an elevator with somebody who clearly has never purchased deordorant, or have a quick conversation with somebody who doesn't know how to use a toothbrush and mouthwash, and I'd be willing to bet that you'll walk a lot more pissed off than you were...so why shouldn't pleasant smells also have an effect on us? I, for one, definitely think there is something to the calming properties of certain scents, and this combination here certainly does its job of having me as cool, and calm as Perry Como after a few muscle relaxers and a glass of wine.
I always seem to have trouble falling asleep, even if I'm not worried about anything, there seems to be something running around in the back of my brain trying to keep me up; who was the first pitcher to win both a Cy Young and MVP in the same season? How far away is the crab nebula? Do fish have tongues? For about the past week now, I've been using this butter every night at bed-time, and I really havent had any issue with those sort of thoughts creeping in to keep me awake, in fact, I've notice that every time I use this butter I get a more restful, deep sleep, and I'm not waking up multiple times throughout the night either. There is really something special about the way this scent works.
If you wanted to wear this stuff during the day time, you totally could, as it seems to offer a bit more hold than your average beard butter, and staying power is also fantastic, delivering that great in-beard feel for hours on end after application.
The bottom line
It's been a while since I've reviewed a Barn Brand product on this page, but I still order from this company regularly (in addition to amazing beard-care products, Tex also makes awesome soaps in a variety of great scents). I've said it before, and I'll say it again, if you're looking for an example of a small-batch indie brand that does everything the right way, look no further than Barn Brand Beards. Even if you are one of the rare people who isn't looking for a night-time butter that promotes better sleep, Tex can still hook you up with some of your new favorite grooming products, from incredible oils, to his new line of moisturizers, when that box with the Barn Brand logo on the outside shows up in the mail, you know there's quality stuff inside. This is a butter that I can't recommend highly enough, without a doubt one of the best night-time products I've ever owned!
