If you haven't familiarized yourself with Anointed AK yet, you have no clue what youre missing. With an extensive catalogue of scents covering a wide varitey of products from the classics like oils and washes, all the way unique offerings that you won't really find any place else (revitalizing beard cream, anyone?), The brand from Eagle River Alaska continues to collect accolades and new fans on an almost daily basis. With so many enticing offerings, it begs the question...what sets their limited editions apart? Well I happened to pick up one of their current, limited offerings, Cereza Suave, a cherry tobacco based scent that seems to have found its way onto the social media feeds of in-the know bearded guys everywhere, just so that we can find an answer to that question. I've been digging a lot of what I've tried from Anointed AK so far, will this stuff make me even more of a fan? Only one way to find out...let's give it a try!
It feels like the combination of cherry and tobacco has become a really popular one among beard care products lately, after reviewing Savage by Ferocious Beard Company, I can see why...it's a fun, refreshing, take on a classic masculine profile. With Cereza Suave, Anointed AK seems to have taken that same concept and, true to form, painted a story with it. With a decidedly old school feel, this scent conjures up images of far away destinations from some sort of storybook fantasy, deep, rich pipe tobacco, pure and intense, makes up the initial opening, dry, chocolately, and perfectly balanced. It's bathed in a sumptuous, juicy black cherry tint that is executed with the brilliance of light and shadow in a Caravaggio painting, to create a deep, burnished accord, wrapped in absolute luxury. This is complimented by a rather unorthodox application of deep, resinous oud, almost smoky in its presence, with just the slightest hint of Japanese Sumi ink, it doesn't demand attention the way oud usually does, instead, it remains content to stand as a sturdy pillar, propping up the intial cherry tobacco redolence. Finally a wonderful, candy like, almost artificial (but in the best possible way) cinnamon gracefully floats in just to add the slightest bit of uplifitng charm, warm and reassuring like the embrace of your favorite jacket on a chilly moonlit night. There is something so flat-out sophisticated about this particular fragrance, everything working brilliantly with everything else, if you want to stop and disect it, it's pretty easy to isolate individual components, but if you just allow it to be taken at face value it creates something so much bigger than the sum of its parts, a certain "what am I smelling" quality that will have you unconsiously going back to indulge yourself in another sniff, before you realize that you've done it. Strength is a notch or two above medium, and staying power is exceptional, lasting a solid eight hours or more every time I've worn it.
How does it work?
In the past I've expressed my desire for Anointed AK to add something like a castor or hemp seed oil to their beard oils just to give them a bit more body and boost the performance, such is still unfortunately the case, but that in no way takes away from the many positives that this product does have to offer, and perhaps the intention is just to be more of an approachable "every day" type of oil to begin with. Viscosity is fairly middle of the road, certainly weighty enough to make it deep into my beard and get down to the skin. I timmed about an inch off of the end of my beard the other day (If you want to ensure that your beard always looks and feels its healthiest, it's a good idea to cut off your dead ends from time to time), and I must say that I'm actually super impressed at how this oil has been able to preserve that extra healthy feeling that comes right after a fresh trim. Every component in the carrier blend seems to be of an exceptionally high quality as both absorption and in-beard feel are fantastic. This product also does a tremendous job of locking in moisture, another testament to the quality of ingredients used. Finishing properties are incredible as this oil imparts a radiant shine to my beard, and staying power is very good, as I've been using this stuff for days on end, and a single morning application always carries me well into the evening without the need for any sort of reapplication.
The Bottom Line
Anointed AK has doen it again! While we already know that their every day products are of a top-shelf quality, it's nice to know that their limited editions are truly something special too. A lot of companies like to crank out new scent after new scent, but very few of those companies are able to consistantly roll out stuff that it's this easy to get excited about. While I have my same minor nitpicks as before with the carrier blend, I understand that there is something to be said about mass appeal, and the more specialized a company gets with their ingredients, the higher the likelihood is that they might turn off potential customers. At the end of the day, this is an outstanding oil, in an amazing scent, and while its limited status means that there will come a time when you can no longer get your hands on it, it's available now, so don't hesitate to pick some up for yourself!
